** Groups of four were chosen last class period and have a specific focus. These will also be your reading groups. All groups are looking to answer the following question: How did (insert your topic) contribute to the death of 19 people in the Salem Witch Trials?
1- Bell Ringer- Reviewed the Four Group Roles
- Leader (keeps everyone on task to complete reading by the end of the period, assigns character roles but listens to requests, records character list, group name, period, and names of individuals in groups, on the group folder)
- Vocabulary- Completes the vocabulary for the assigned act (see vocabulary sheet below)
- Evidence Tracker- Write down three quotes from the act you are assigned. Be sure to include the act number and page number in parenthesis at the end of each quote. For example, if your group is focusing on the religious influence at the Salem Witch Trials, you are looking for evidence of this in the script.
- Story Plot- There is a story plot/chart to be completed for each act.
Note: There are four roles and four people in each group. There are also four acts. Therefore, you should switch roles each act. This will result in each of you completing the different roles at least once.
GROUP FOLDER- Keep your evidence tracker, vocabulary sheet, and story plot sheet in the group folder. These will be submitted for a group grade at the end of the reading.
2- Pre-reading
- Assign/pick character parts (5 minutes)
Leaders, be sure to record the parts and who is doing them on your folder.
3- During Reading
- Complete your assigned role: leader, vocabulary, evidence quotes, story plot
- Individual assignment- Select one character to "web" throughout all four acts (Do the web in your journal.) At the end of Act IV you should have at least 10 points on your web.
4- Post Reading
- Individual assignment - Write a summary of each act (4-5 sentences). Record this in your journal. You may come up with this as a group, but each of you must record it in your journal for a journal grade.
5- READ ACT I
(Group leaders, when you reach a "character description" section, please just skim through it and give your group the general points. Do not read the entire thing or you will not complete your reading on time. If a member of your group has selected that character for their web, they will want to use this section for the web.)
Skim but do not read the following character descriptions:
p. 1105- Thomas Putnam
p. 1108- John Proctor
p. 1110- Rebecca
p. 1113- Reverend Hale & Religious Background*
Note: *If you are the group focusing on religion, your "evidence tracker" person may want to look for quotes/evidence in this section even though the group won't be reading all of this.
p. 1117 - Giles
p.1115- Rye Poisoning Article (We have already discussed this in class during building background last class period, but the "environment" group may want to use information from this article for their "evidence tracker".)
IF YOU DON'T FINISH ACT I IN CLASS, IT IS HOMEWORK!
