Bill of Rights
Journal Notes (Cornell Notes) Amendments 1-10 (summarizing the important points of the 10 Amendments) Video Review First- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYEfLm5dLMQ (paused to discuss each) Reading Review- (Handout of 10 Amendments) Discussion- Modern day examples of cases connected to the Bill of Rights - Death Penalty (Cruel and Unusual) - Flag Burning (Freedom of Speech) - Government Access to Your Cell Phone Data (Search and Siezure) - Taxes (State Rights) Modeling (Example) - How to do your next portfolio assignment (persuasive research paper) 1- Select an amendment that interests you. I chose the First Amendment. 2- Find a modern case that involves this amendment. I chose the recent article about Boise's new rules that limits panhandling or homeless/poor people from holding signs or soliciting money on the streets. 3- Gather research that supports whether you agree or disagree with one side of this case. You must have at least one article about the actual case and another about case law that will support your views on the case: is it a violation of the First Amendment? Have there been similar cases? Finally, you must find at least one article that supports the opposing side of this case. In other words, you must look at both sides of the issue. I have attached my example articles below. I shared these examples in class. I chose to say that Boise is wrong for enacting this city ordinance. My contentions are that this ordinance not only violates their First amendment right, it's contradictory and counterproductive to fine homeless/poor people. I must prove this though. My first article is about the ACLU challenging the ordinance and suing the city of Boise over it. My second article is First Amendment past case. My third article addresses the main argument that many people have about homeless people: that they use the money for drugs and alcohol. Review- We reviewed the use of ethos, logos, and pathos in the art of persuasion. Ethos- make sure your sources for your articles are credible (no blogs or wikipedia) Logos- make sure you have factual evidence, case study, specific case detail, etc. to argue your point Pathos- create the emotional connection/persuasion through a video (students must also find a video that supports their views on their chosen topic/case) *video should not exceed 3 minutes This is the video I used to persuade them to look at homeless people differently: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJQ3Bgh8PE4 Computer Lab- Research - The last hour of class was spent in the computer lab collecting the three articles and one video link - Articles were to be copy and pasted onto a Word document along with sourcing info and web address - Link for the video should also be posted on the Word document - Students were to post their research in my Inbox http://www.idahostatesman.com/2013/11/04/2850793/aclu-sues-boise-over-new-panhandling.html Panhandling law in Boise http://www.idahohousing.com/homelessness-in-idaho-services-and-reports/homelessness-prevention-and-assistance.aspx http://www.nationalhomeless.org/factsheets/addiction.pdf Alcoholism and the Homeless http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/23/shane-warren-speegle-says_n_1694577.html Against panhandling http://www.hfcsd.org/webpages/tnassivera/files/common%20core%20persuasive%20rubric.doc Persuasive Essay Rubric Journal Prompt- "Patriotism"
