SPEAKERS & SENIOR PROJECT PROPOSAL - All week I had community speakers come in to offer ideas for job shadowing and volunteering. - Mr. Cady and Mr. Stern came in and spoke to the students about next year's Senior Project. - Students completed the rough draft of their senior project proposal offering ideas of what type of volunteer work and projects they might do this summer. (See the link title "Senior Project" for more ideas/links) - I have attached a list of the speakers who came and spoke to the students. I've included contact info. (attached below)
GATSBY PARTY/CHAPTER 9
- Decorated for Gatsby Party - Gatsby Food - Dance Class Taught Us Charleston - Watched Chapter 9 - Dressed Up & Photo Shoot Chapter 9 Question- How did Gatsby and his story symbolize the American Dream? Gatsby Journals Due GATSBY CHAPTER 7 Bell Ringer- Review - What happened in Chapter 6? - Went over today's activity (see handout below) Activity- Research and Debate - Students finished reading Chapter 7 (30 minutes) If they were on a debate team, their journal notes were specific to their side of the case and included quotes (with page numbers) to support their side If they were on the jury, they made a t-chart in their journal and recorded evidence for both sides, as they read. - Debate Case 1- Does Daisy love Tom or Gatsby more? Case 2- Is Gatsby responsible for Myrtle's death? (Guilty or Not Guilty) Each side presented an opening argument, questions, rebuttal, and closing remarks. The jury took more notes in their journals then deliberated (out loud for a grade) after the case was presented. Bell Ringer- Trade Dialogue Journals (for Chapter 5) Discussion- Reviewed what happened in Chapter 5 Guiding Questions- 1. Why is Gatsby so nervous? 2. What happens when Nick returns to the cottage? 3. What does Gatsby say about the dock across the bay? What's the significance of this? 4. Why is Daisy crying over the shirts Gatsby is throwing at her? Why is he throwing them at her? 5. Does Gatsby finally have what he wants? What was it and how could it have possibly changed Daisy? 3. As a result of that and what we read about Mrs. Wilson in the second chapter, wrong or right, does the reader have a tendency to excuse Daisy's behavior or at least understand it? Write- Gatsby One Paragraph Journal Response (write this on the top half of your Chapter 6 journal page) Who is a gullible character in chapters 1-5. Use specific quotes, with page numbers" to support your claim. Make sure you warrant your quotes.
