Bell Ringer- Survey for Mr. Woolstenhulme
Activity- Review Puritan Packet
- Working from the back to the front of the packet, students located the Puritan vocabulary list to be used next class period.
- Then students skimmed the "Examples of Puritan Laws" handout for a couple of laws that seemed extreme or unusual.
Discussion- Students shared thoughts on these laws and their punishments.
Read- 1641 Massachusetts Body of Liberties (Section 94) Handout
- We read these as a class with students volunteering to summarize, out loud, each offense and discuss how it compares to modern day crimes and punishments.
- Discussion on Salem Witch Trials when reviewing Capital Laws #2.
- A student volunteer read "The New England Colonies: Puritan Life 3d" to the class. Then the class discussed it.
Discussion- General review of Puritanism and how their values and beliefs affected their writing.
Activity- Sermon- "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" (attached below)
- Seven students volunteered to take turns reading each chapter to the class. Readers were asked to consider their audience, tone, and purpose. There were a lot of great readers who fully acted out their readings and did a great job!
Brainstorm- Modern Day Pet Peeves
- Then it was our turn to create a list of pet peeves from our society. A student scribe posted the ideas on the board. Students offered suggestions.
FREEWRITE- Students were asked to select ONE of the pet peeves and write about it for 15 minutes. The idea was also to reach 200 words in that 15 minutes. Freewrites were recorded in journals.
CONSEQUENCE Web- Create a web indicating the type of punishment that will be issued for violating your pet peeve. What is it for the first offense, the second, the third, etc. This web should be recorded in your journal.
