Freewrites are timed writing (fluency) assessments. Students are given a prompt and instructed to write complete sentences on the topic. They write as many thoughts as they can in the given time period. Proficient juniors should write 50-100 words during a five minute freewrite.
Prompt- What is an American?
Composition Notebooks/Journals- Students wrote their freewrites in their class composition notebook/journal. These journals remain in the classroom in the crate marked for their period. If they do not have a journal yet, they may purchase one for .50.
- Classroom Discussion- What is an American?
Pair share first (identify a strong descriptive phrase)
Brainstorm on the board (as a whole class)
- Picture Day- Students took approximately 30 minutes of class time today to have their school pictures taken. Envelopes were provided at the sitting.

- Classroom Calendar
I post a calendar in my classroom. This is a junior calendar and I put a new one up each month. Any school activities, events, meetings, or big tests, are posted on it. Students may also put their birthday on the calendar if they choose to celebrate with the birthday group (monthly treat).
