Bell Ringer- Archetype- Write definition in your journal (look up definition in textbook and reword the definition in your own words)
Model- I modeled how to do quick reading v. close reading.
Discussion- What is a creation myth? How is what we deem as "myth" influenced by our culture, society, and belief system? Did Romans, back in the day, really believe that Poseidon was a god who lived in the sea? How do Native Americans explain creations?
Activity (Group Sheet)- sheet attached below
- Each group was assigned a specific creation myth or poem from the following list:
1) Pg. 14 "I am a Feather" & Pg. 21 "The Earth Only"
2) Pg. 20 "The Sky Tree"
3) Pg. 22-23 "Coyote Finishes His Work"
4) Pg. 24-26 "The Blackfeet Genesis
They completed the worksheet for their assigned reading. All readings were from our textbook.
- Group Writing (Round Robin Writing)
After reviewing the story plot elements, students were given one minute and 30 seconds intervals to write a creation myth. They selected the topic ahead of time. For example, they may have chosen why flamingos are pink or why the wind blows. Every time the time expired, they passed the paper to the next person in their group and that person continued to write the story. Each person in the group wrote at least twice for one minute and 30 seconds each for a total of 12 minutes. Groups were not allowed to talk to each other during the writing process. Some groups had time to share their stories with the class.
