Bell Ringer- Brainstorm Pet Peeves (Discussion)
Write- 10 Minute Freewrite in Journal (Goal 100-150 words)
What is one of your pet peeves? Why does it bother you? Give personal examples of this pet peeves. Offer solutions or consequences.
Review- Puritan and Colonial Timeline/Background of Jonathan Edwards (Pg. 104)
Activity- Melodramatic Readings of "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards (pg. 106-111). Volunteers read excerpts of this sermon and they tried to give it their best melodramatic attempt. :)
Read- Blue Laws Handout (Puritan "Pet Peeves")
- Students were asked to record three of the most interesting laws in their journal
Share- Briefly discussed the laws they chose
Write- Students used their freewrite to create a 30 second (6-10 sentence) "Pet Peeve Sermon". They were encouraged to use Old English with their modern day problem. For example, they might say "Thou shalt not leave one square of tissue upon thine toilet paper cylinder." They were provided with a list of Old English words for reference and were given 30-40 minutes to complete this assignment in their journal. They were encouraged to take it home if they did not complete it.
