Textbook- 60 Second “Search and Find” on Emily Dickinson (pg. 548-549)
Students have 60 seconds to skim through the material and find two interesting facts on the subject. Then I call on people to share a fact (popcorn discussion). This is brief, but helpful.
Analyze Dickinson Poem Pg. 552 “This is my letter to the World”
Model analysis on the board. Draw three columns. (I have attached a graphic organizer if you were absent. Please complete this so you know how to do this when you return.)
1. We began by analyzing the structure. How many stanzas and lines? Does it have a rhyme scheme or use repetition? Did they notice anything else in the structure that stands out? For example her random capitalization and use of dashes (modern technology turns two short dashes into a long dash, but she used two dashes). Her frequent use of two dashes and her random capitalization were considered a bit “rebellious” for the time period. That may be as wild as she got!
2. Content relates to meaning. We deconstructed each line to determine the meaning of the poem. We read it all the way through once before we started to do this though. In the second column, we recorded our ideas about each line.
3. Does the author use any literary devices? Where, how, and why? In the third column we recorded examples of literary devices (quotes and line numbers).
Discuss- Structure, Content, Literary Devices (3 Column Graphic Organizer)
