1- JOB INTERVIEWS
Vickie Holbrook- Editor for the Idaho Press-Tribune for 35 years and now PR for the Mayor's office, spoke to my 1A class on May 6th. Her topic was JOB INTERVIEWS.
- Handshake (importance, types, do's and don'ts)
Handshake Video (I presented this later)
"How to Meet Jeff Gordon":

- Dress to Impress (even when you go to drop off the application make sure you're not dressed sloppily)
- Be nice to the receptionist (they often report "waiting room" behaviors to those who are conducting the interview)
- When they say, "Do you have any questions for us/me?" have one
- Practice the drive there (don't be late)
- Don't be too early either
- PRACTICE YOUR QUESTIONS ahead of time (this is huge)
- Google yourself (reputation management) - many employers google your name now to see what they can find
- Research the company
- Don't talk TOO much
- Eye contact
- Don't say negative things about previous employer and do share "very personal things
Companies also like to ask "behavior" or "personality" questions now. Be prepared for something like "if you could be any animal, what would you be and why" because these tell the employer more than you realize (as we saw in class) :)
2- RESUMES AND COVER LETTERS
Jennifer Humeston- St. Alphonsus
Jennifer provided all of the students with a sample resume and cover letter and discussed what they look for in each when they're hiring. She also discussed the online application process and filtering systems. She gave an extensive list of volunteer opportunities for students over the summer. I have an application for students who are interested. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS WEDNESDAY, MAY 14TH.
I have attached her PPT below.
3- DRESS CODES & RESUMES
Camille Lane- Capital Educators
Camille will be speaking next week as well. It's always good for students to see that a dress code is not just a "school thing" to torture them. :) In fact, they thought the Cap. Ed. dress code, located in the employee handbook, was even stricter than the school dress code. I have attached that PPT below.
4- SCHOLARSHIP ESSAYS
Students were also given more computer lab time to complete scholarship essays.
4- VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES/SENIOR PROJECT
Please go to my "Volunteer Opportunities" tab on this web site (Home page- left tab) and review the MANY opportunities available. All juniors will be required to do 15 hours of volunteer service for their senior project. It is much easier if those hours are completed over the summer. There are also fantastic, relevant, and fun opportunities to participate in this summer.
