- Using the handout, create a timeline in your journal.
- Use no less than 7 bullets and follow the example posted at the end of today's posting. Two of the bullets do not have dates but you can see that two significant events took place between his birth and 1620.
- For each bullet or timeline mark, please make brief notes to indicate what events occurred in his life.
Read- Of Plymouth Plantation (text available as "Student Edition: from Of Plymouth Plantation, pp. 5-18 in my course section of itslearning)
- Choose ONE of the following chapters to read:
Chapter 9 (pg. 5-8), Chapter 10 (pg. 9-13), Chapter 11 (pg. 14-18)
Activity- You will read ONE of the paragraphs and create picture notes for that paragraph.
- You must create a minimum of six pictures and they must be sequenced in an organized manner with comic strip boxes, story map arrows, etc. that make the sequence of events very clear.
- You should include some text with each picture.
- In class we traded journals with someone who had read a different chapter and students wrote a one sentence summary of what they believed happened in the chapter, based on the picture notes.
Discussion- Groups shared their summaries of each chapter.
Narrative Writing- See page 20 of your textbook (also found at the end of "Plymouth Plantation" found in itslearning).
PERFORMANCE TASK
Writing Activity: Journal Entry or Letter of Bradford’s account describes how the Pilgrims adapted to life in New England. Explore that experience in one of two brief writing tasks. (minimum two paragraphs)
1. Choose one event that Bradford describes and write a journal entry in the character of one of the other English participants in the event. Consider how a personal journal might be different from Bradford’s narrative written for publication.
OR
2. In the character of one of the Pilgrims who survived the first year in New England, write a letter to someone back in England describing your current situation and how it has improved.
Base both pieces of writing on details from the text to create a coherent narrative. As much as possible, mirror the seventeenth-century style that Bradford uses.
Complete this assignment in your journal.
