Bell Ringer- Discussion
What is the difference between the topic and the theme of a piece of literary work?
The poem may be about trees (the topic), but the message or theme may be that trees are symbolic of parents who shade their children from the ugliness of our world, but can only protect them for so long before their leaves have fallen and their branches are barren.

** We discussed Mr. Walt Disney's political background prior to viewing this video. As they viewed the video, they were to watch for two topics that could later be turned into themes.
Discussion- What were the topics?
Activity- Turning the topics into Facebook themes (Did this together on the board.)
Analyzing Poetry (Guided Practice) - Anne Bradstreet "Upon the Burning of Our House" (pg. 96-97) We read her background info on page 94 first.
Students volunteered to read different stanzas to the class. Class discussion about diction (word choice) and forming meaning as we read. Asked for personal connections as well.
Writing the Analysis- We did this together on the board using a template and emphasizing the use of text based evidence to support the themes they came up with.
Individual Practice- Pg. 102 "Huswifery" by Edward Taylor
Used 1/2 sheet note-catcher to gather evidence for analysis. Then wrote two paragraph analysis. Students will have 15 more minutes next class to finish.
