CDW Practice/Review
- Reviewed the difference between a claim and a data point
- Reviewed the importance of quoting from the text and/or using sources at the end of the sentence to indicate a data point
- After reading it individually, students identified main ideas in a paragraph of text using Benjamin Franklin's essay, Remarks Concerning the Savages of North America
- Individually, and then as a group, students developed a claim that could be argued about the main idea
- As a group, students identified and discussed specific lines (data points) from the text, that would clearly support the claim (also discussed using quote marks to strengthen the credibility of the evidence)
- Identified claims and supporting evidence in one or two other paragraphs of Franklin's essay, for additional practice
