Essential question:
Are we desensitized?
Bell Ringer:
Dialog journal quiz
Activity:
We created foldables in class.
Students will mark the first tab “Box in title” the second, “Trace paragraphs” the third, “# paragraphs” then, “ST” then, “key word” “read the question” “Label the question” “1,2,3.”
These foldables are made by folding eight pieces of paper over each other so that there is about an inch overlap.
“Box in the title” section simply means to draw a box around the title.
“Trace paragraphs” section means to trace the form of the paragraph outside of the paragraphs. This provides a visual separator of the article.
“# paragraphs” section allows the students to refer back to the exact paragraph where they found certain information
“ST” means to stop and think. ST will be written at the end of each paragraph to remind the student to stop and think about the paragraph they just read.
“Key word” here the students circle the key word from each paragraph. This helps them identify the main topic of each paragraph.
“Read the question” section comes near the end so that, contrary to popular belief, the students read the question after absorbing the articles information.
“Label the question” section is a one letter visual of the type of question asked. For example, if the question refers to a vocabulary term, the student will write the letter “V” next to the question.
Here is a list of possible types of words (these are also tier 25 words):
V= vocabulary
O= organize
E= Edit
Ex= Explain
F= Fact
EST= Estimate
Dem= Demonstrate
P= Predict
Para= Paraphrase
Hyp= Hypothesize
Ref= Reflect
Sum= Summarize
POV= Point of View
Com/Con= Compare/Contrast
“1,2,3 ” section is where the students will look at the question, find where the answer is written in the article, and put the number of the paragraph where the answer was found next to the question.
After the students fully create their foldables, we will try them out on the text.
Read/Write activity:
I provided background information behind the essay, Amusing ourselves to death. The author goes over the novels, 1984, Animal Farm, and Brave new world. You can look up summaries online.
Now that we have created the foldable, Employ these strategies as you read the article. We will be having a quiz over the article next time, so make sure to cover the steps that are necessary without any questions.
When the article is read, The students will need to create warrants to the claims and evidences below. They need to do each claim but pick just one evidence provided. They have been having issues providing good warrants in their papers. Have them warrant the quotes. The students need to record the claim and evidence provided and then create the warrant. (Demonstrate the warrant poster to the students. These guidelines for creating warrants will help). These warrants need to be recorded on the work sheet provided.
Provide three claims from the text with evidence on the board:
Claim1- The world is becoming much like how Orwell predicted
Evidence-“America is engaged in the world’s most ambitious experiment to accommodate itself to the technological distractions made possible by the electric plug” (Postman 449).
Evidence-“Orwell warned that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression” (448).
Claim2- Technology is having more negative effects than positive
Evidence-“The problem is not that TV presents the masses with entertaining subject matter, but that television presents all subject matter as entertaining” (449).
Evidence-“So many Americans now prefer to get their religious instruction from television rather than church” (450).
