Discuss: What quote is the most important from these two chapters?
Mockingbird Talk
Read these two quotes. In your own words, discuss as a class why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.
“I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” –Atticus. “Your father’s right. . . . Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” –Miss Maudie
Mad Dog Scare
Each group member read one article about the mad dog scare that occurred in the early 1900s. “Directions: Answer the three questions in your notebook about the article you chose. Share your answers to the three questions with your group. As a group you should be able to answer this question: What was the Mad Dog Scare?”
Symbolism
Mad Dogs (people that are diseased with Racism)
Who might be the “mad dog”? Who might Atticus have to "shoot"?
Mockingbirds (defenseless people who try to help others)
Who might be the “mockingbird”? Who might Atticus have to protect?
Courage
How does Atticus define courage? He says, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” What does he mean? Do you agree with him?
Atticus says, “[Mrs. Dubose] was the bravest person I ever knew.” Why does he say that? Do you agree that she was brave? Why or why not?
