Exploratory Essays
The point of the exploratory essay is to ask an inquiry question and find out as much as you can to try to answer your question. Then write about your inquiry and findings.
Many paper assignments call for you to establish a position and defend that position with an effective argument. However, some assignments are not argumentative, but rather, they are exploratory. Exploratory essays ask questions and gather information that may answer these questions. However, the main point of the exploratory or inquiry essay is not to find definite answers. The main point is to conduct inquiry into a topic, gather information, and share that information with readers.
ASSIGNMENT (Group) * due end of period
Using the four articles from last week, write a five paragraph exploratory essay.
Suggested Approach:
1) Brainstorm main points from each article
2) Develop a thesis question
3) Create an outline that identifies the three body paragraph topics
4) Write collectively on one sheet or divide and conquer taping it all together when finished
Reviewed
Outline- What goes in an intro paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion
*This assignment also assessed teamwork and leadership skills
HOMEWORK- Come to class next time with an exploratory topic in mind
Reminder- Poem books are now worth half credit! You can still turn them in this week. I will be calling parents tomorrow if your book isn't in!
