Exploratory Essays
- Introduced Essay and Requirements (see below) - Went to computer lab to research and to practice inserting footnotes - Created an outline or graphic organizer for your essay Exploratory Essays The point of this exploratory essay is to ask an inquiry question and find out as much as you can to try to answer your question. Then write about your inquiry and findings. Many paper assignments call for you to establish a position and defend that position with an effective argument. However, some assignments are not argumentative, but rather, they are exploratory. Exploratory essays ask questions and gather information that may answer these questions. However, the main point of the exploratory or inquiry essay is not to persuade. The main point is to conduct inquiry into a topic, gather information, and share that information with readers. Instead of “proving” you are right about something, you simply ask a question and learn as you go or research. This type of writing often appears in scientific journals, textbooks, and encyclopedias. Introductions for Exploratory Essays The introduction is the broad beginning of the paper and introduced your important question(s) on a topic. You should answer the questions in an exploratory essay by doing the following:
How is cheese made? Why did they stop making Twinkies? What forms of alternative energy are available? Requirements Your essay must be at least five paragraphs long and include a reference page as well as footnotes throughout the body of the paper. (Insert – reference- footnote- just click okay). Use MLA as you format your footnotes. Do not use “I” in your paper. Review- Writing a Cover Letter
http://jobsearch.about.com/od/coverletterwriting/a/coverlettertips.htm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0suKZ-oU8s The following tips were also posted on the board: 1) Do not use a generic, one-size-fits-all cover letter; personalize it 2) Do not simply restate your resume 3) Look up the job description for the job you are applying for and use the same language they are using 4) Do not write more than one page 5) Do have someone else look at your letter to check for spelling, content, etc. 6) Research or call to find the name of the person you should address it to Paragraph 1- Use the specific name of the position you are applying for. Let them know how you found out about the job and why you are interested in it. Paragraph 2- This is where you use "their vocabulary" to describe how you will fit into this position. Really sell yourself in this paragraph. Paragraph 3- Thank them for the opportunity. Remind them what a great asset you will be. Let them know how you will follow up to see if the position has been filled (phone call or e-mail). Write- Rough Draft of Cover Letter Speakers Capital Educators- Thank you Camille!
